Women, Sex and Animism: An Anecdote

In one of the retreats I attended some weeks ago we have discussed the concepts of ecozoic era and its personal, academic and its institutional impact and one of the highlights talked about was the early Filipino practice of animism – historical accounts show that pre-colonial Filipinos believed that there were spirits not only in humans but also in inanimate objects around us.

The core of the discussion centered on the structure and function of believing in spirits in relation to respecting our environment that the animist’s belief in the spirits that dwells in trees, rivers, stones etc. performed a function, that is to protect these inanimate subjects from exploiting and abusing them.

The retreat house was surrounded by lush greeneries, gentle breeze, cold weather, and away from the beeps and honks of the city life.

The group had lunch together. While on the table, it’s a typical ‘pinoy’ (jargon for Filipino) eating set-up, talking just about anything while eating, out of the blue one of our seasoned male companion said, where’s the comfort room? And then one lady at the other table said, oh somebody is still inside, if you can’t hold on it you can release it in one of trees outside, anyway, nobody’s there to see you. And then everybody began sharing stories about early ‘pinoy’ practice of animism.

One lady said, can you remember in your younger years when grandmothers and grandfathers would tell you not to urinate anywhere, especially at night because you might pee on somebody not like ours? Remember to say, tabi-tabi po! (Excuse me) as a gesture of respect to these creatures. And then this man, feeling uneasy said, I’ll just hold on it those creatures might prod on my p___ and it might swell, my wife’s going to get mad at me, and everybody went laughing. At a distance this naughty math teacher shouted … No, no, no! Your wife won’t get mad, she will even tell you to go back and pee here again, they prefer swollen p_____, all the men in the room laughed and in chorus said …. Now that served another function.

What's wrong with this picture?

Advocacies to save the Earth from human’s wrongdoings have been the second religion of environmentalists these days. Campaigns left and right have been so dramatic for the past years, even we from the so-called developing nations – Philippines were also into this craze – if I may call it that.

September 26 weekend was spent to a family bonding in Samal Island here in Davao City, I just love this part of the island’s picture perfect pristine beach, tranquil sea breeze and a renewing cozy nap on the side. I was opening half my eyes when out of the blue at the farthest of my sight a streak of black smoke appeared in hazy silver spout, I took my camera and capture the sight, well, technically something really is wrong with this picture as I am not a professional photographer, but deep beyond this fuzzy photograph I knew something really, I swear is wrong and I knew you know it too.

Weekend Birthday at Samal

My eldest son, Leandro turned 10 today. Time flies really so fast, for the last 9 birthdays fancy places were booked for him and his sister, classmates and other friends to enjoy his day, but today we opted, and he suggested in fact, to have it low key so we have it held in a beach at Samal Island.

We woke up raining so hard, so we thought of cancelling the trip, but an hour later the sun showed and we decided to go. Typhoon Ondoy in the area of responsibility of the Philippines so the seas were so disturbed, although Davao City is quite far from Luzon, we still got a bit of its fury, the crossing of the channel was an experience, big waves tossed the boat up and down, and every time it goes down, I just thought to let the angels in the heavens forgive me for all my shortcomings. I frequent this route, but it was the first time I crossed with humungous, raging waves, I said to myself, if this experience of 15 minutes crossing a raging sea made me call all the gods and goddesses to save me, how do those people that survived the Super Ferry 9 and other sea tragedies been feeling? Ohhhh… thank God, it wasn’t my time.

The children enjoyed the waters since it’s a cloudy day, soaking in the water was as comforting as it is warm and really inviting. We had chicken….. ang walang kamatayang chicken, crabby pattie was shoving dead and land our plates with coconut milk and lots of ginger…. Etc… etc… and a cake courtesy of Tita Bergette, a mariachi Samal Island style, a stroll, a nap and a cool, firm sea breeze completed the day.

The going home part was again another experience on a wild sea, if this is normal then this might just be a coping mechanism of the people on board the boat, that instead of a frightful gestures towards what we are experiencing … wow…. We all had been shouting …. yeheeeyy everytime the boat goes up and down … indeed yeheey, we all knocked down tired on our soft beds at home. Thanks. It was a day, really I swear.

Family Day at Ateneo GS

The Luga's trooped Ateneo grade school last Sunday, Sept. 20 to attend Level 2-Mabait family day, wearing Tita Cory's magic color - yellow. Usual reasons -- family bonding, knowing your child's teachers, knowing your child's classmates parents and giving you a chance to know up close and personal your child’s classmates which you just often hear their names in your child’s mouth …. Si Adrian kasi sinira nya ang tali ko sa hair…. Si Patricia friend ko …. Si Lloyd kaaway ko … si Omar sinulatan yung uniform ko … etc. etc….

It started with a 7:30 am mass, which obviously events held this early would do wonders if we can come on time and time and again, we are late. The program went well, the children had sung the Lupang Hinirang, the Blue Knight song quite well, except for obviously the lyrics, it’s just funny to note that I have passed this way once also, just singing out loud unmindful of the words you are saying …. Basta kanta ka lang ng kanta. Every parent brought and shared in their food. After the rumble’s over, isa pang madugong part eng event ….. manghipos…. Kalooy ni titser.

TO BE ALONE

For some reasons a message of unknown origin tuned my mobile phone today and it read;

Don’t be sad if sometimes you are alone,
Being alone gives you a space to grow,
As it is hard to grow when you are close to someone.
Remember that trees are planted far from each so they can spread their branches.

I don’t normally respond to messages of unknown origin but for some reasons I replied and composed;

On the contrary;
I have been wanting to be alone,
But the trees around me has grown so tall,
Has grown their branches so lush,
Has grown their roots so deep,
Has grown their trunks too big and that;

Wanting to be alone is a possibility yet so far away;
Wanting to be alone would mean a long wait for those verdant branches to wither and fall; Wanting to be alone is a space you cannot move would mean enduring, bearing, persisting; Wanting to be alone is a realization of choosing amid living, surviving and dying.
