MARAGUSAN CLIMB 1998 - Nostalgia

Photobucket
About thirteen years ago I joined the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI) national congress and climb at Mt. Candalaga in Maragusan, Compostela Province.
It was one of the so called unforgettable chapter and the most excruciating part of my life, literally.

I didn’t prepare for this climb because my co-workers back then said, it’ll be just a fun out-of-town camping but when we get there, I never thought I would confront the greatest fear of my life and that was to climb a mountain with just a mere can of sardines and a pack of noodle. But somehow I managed to survived the 12-hour uphill climb with all the leeches, snakes, mosquitoes and calling all the gods along the way.

I thought of sharing the experiences and photos that I had for the next month of Nostalgia.

So this is the invitation leaflet …

Maragusan town lies in the heart of Compostela Valley Province North of Davao City, it’s about 6-hour bus ride from Davao City.

I remember we arrived Maragusan exhausted and hungry, I knew I could devour a whole elephant back then but there weren’t no open ‘carenderia’ during that time because it was on a Sunday and was also drizzling. So we requested an old lady in this little house to cook us food and we’ll just pay in return, that old lady was kind enough to feed us.

So the croc was full and went to rest, at a ledge in the municipal flag pole area, after a day’s rough road journey.

After an hour, the organizer buzzed us to gather at the municipal gym for the final instructions, but the rested croc went to get some photo opp with the majestic Compostela Valley at the background.

So, after our whats, the whys, the whos and the hows were answered, we were asked to climb this dump truck to be transported to the first camp. We actually don’t know some of these guys, but that was this climb was all about, extending arms and knowing lotssa friends …. It was a real clean fun! The dump truck ride was long and bumpy, I swear the devils around there has covered ears, human voices were too loud and piercing.

After we were dumped and all, just in case we’ll lost our way to the second camp after 12-hour hike, we’ll have at least a souvenir shot.

More of this adventure next week.

BOOK SWAPPING ONLINE MADE EASY!

Since staying here in my in-laws house I have accrued quiet a number of books and the problem now is a space to strut them, I’m thinking of giving them away but I always feel a heavy heart every time I think about it, I spent quiet a fortune in those books and I want them on my shelves for future reference, however thinking that others might also benefit and pick up lessons from the life of Nelson Mandela I would love to swap them with those that I’m interested in too.

I recently discovered this terribly interesting internet based book swap program where you can trade your pre-loved books with the other members of this online book community.

All you have to do is visit www.BooksfreeSwap.com and register for free, and then come up with a list of all the books you want to get rid of and post it in your profile, other members who are interested in your list would inform you that they want the book, all you have to do is accept the swap request, pack the books and send it to the recipient, you don’t have to worry about the shipment fee since it will be shouldered by the requesting member.

The same process applies if you browse other members list of books and want to have them too. Oh, by the way, audio books are also available.

This program does not only allow you to get rid of all those tree carcasses in your shelves, you get to read great books for free too. And on top of everything it’s a great way to save Mama Earth and a great antidote to boredom.

So register now, it’s free!

ON ONLINE GAMING

Hello world, I’m feeling great today I’m having my own mama time here, the kids went out with their pap and the great troll is not around too, wow, I felt like I won tons of moolah from Casino gambling online today, Oh which by the way, I’ve read from a testimonial in a casino site that someone raked thousands of dollars in just a matter of two hours.

Wow, today’s life really gives you so much option to amass wealth, this gaming online is one of them. And the best part you don’t have to go far to enjoy. Online casinos offer same perks as you’re on the physical space, only you don’t have to dress-up well, no pretty girls, no bad boys around. Even then, I find this online system more liberating.

Tata guys, thanks for dropping by on this side of town.

THE WINNING FEELING

Let me tell you a little secret, I’m feeling like I won tons of moolah from online Casino today, the monsters around here has gone to Europe with her friends, I’m so, so happy. The travel agency said they will be on tour for three weeks, so if the cat is away the mouse will play.

It’s my heart’s desire to see Prague too but not with my MIL around. Should we have been in best of terms; probably I'm on top of the Pacific Ocean now heading my way to Prague too.

But what can I do, maybe I should just try my luck instead playing poker here, I might get a round trip ticket from Pinas to Praha too.

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?

What if one day, you’re sitting in your toilet bowl doing your number two with your hands clutched in your face and your elbows on your knees, deeming the second most pleasurable feeling on Earth, and then steadily you’re up attempting to drain those rubbish sh-t, then suddenly it stopped right at the brim and threatens to spill over your newly bought non-slip rags … what are you going to do?

I suspect you would scream your heart out, rousing the whole house and then what? Get the toilet pump? Call for emergency, call the fire station? Gosh, I beg your indulgence but this thing really had happened to me not once but twice.

I can’t believe this toilet thing can make or break someone’s day, good if you’re living in places like San Francisco, you can immediately call for a pro to unclog toilet, but in this country? It’ll take you another pooping day before those sh-t gonna get down the drain.

But seriously, these people living in San Francisco and San Mateo area are the luckiest; you have professional plumbing service you can always call at anytime. These guys are not only expert in unclogging your toilet, they also can do water heater replacement, fix your leaking faucet, can do sewer replacement services and many more.

So worry no more, just get into the feeling and call them if anything untoward happen.

Tata, thanks lovelies thanks for dropping by on this side of town.

EXPLORE ODESSA, UKRAINE

I first had a vivid picture of Russia when I started reading Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, it was a thick book, but I managed somehow to finish it in a month, with all the interruptions. The story gives you a vivid picture of the 19th-century Russian Life, I thought my fascination with this country ended there, until Jessica Soho, a local TV reporter here, aired in her TV program – the life, the rich culture, the wonderful people, the great food and the picturesque places in Ukraine, that show really blew me away.

From that time on, I yearned to see this part of the world. Although, at this very moment this is not my priority yet, but in God’s perfect time, I would claim I could see this place.

The famed Potemkin Stairs in Odessa, Ukraine
(Image not mine)

But to some who have oozing passion to explore this culturally-rich part of the world, start working on your travel documents now, accommodation is not quiet a problem, there are Odessa Ukraine hotels that are ready to serve you.

CONSIDER POLISHED CONCRETE FLOORING

God willing, fingers crossed, and if everything will go smoothly as planned our dream house will be constructed late next year. It’s not a grand abode though but just a decent house for a family of five.

I hope to get some time with our friend architect here to bring him to the site before drawing on the details of the house plan.

It would be a simple modern house with no fancy and flares. But what I’m so particular with is the would-be flooring. My first thought would be to install wood tile panels but I just thought it would be hard to source wood tile around.

But this stained concrete flooring in particular is so awesome looking, its another flooring style where an ordinary concrete floor slab undergo processing and concrete polishing that eventually will turn the whole thing into a shiny, visually appealing, and resembles a real natural stone and on top of everything this kind of flooring option is environmentally sustainable. Just perfect.

I’m seriously considering installing polished concrete flooring in my future house. I hope I can get a contractor around town that won’t tax me much.

And if you want to know more about polished concrete flooring idea, I recommend you visit www.concreteartfx.com, you can browse at their portfolio and see the beauty of their work, they also have a comprehensive package on the installation and setting up services, in fact you can avail of their free estimate service.

So don’t just build a home, build it with style!

Nostalgia

Photobucket
As I write, I’m teary-eyed watching this three Filipina ladies  in Japan being interviewed by Pia Arcanghel over ‘Balitanghali’-GMA News TV, my heart really melt seeing them caught in the middle of this nuclear radiation dilemma, although they look alright, the anxiety that they are feeling really jolt me out, can’t do anything but beg for their safety. Glad this GMA news team mediates to rescue them.

Anyway, this post is not actually about these radiation-torn ladies, but about my nostalgia post hosted by Rose of Nostalgic Marveling, its quiet hard to shift subject with a heavy heart…. But nonetheless those who are not directly (as of today) affected by this nuclear threat have to go on with their lives.
Come what may, even with the threat of radiation exposure, lol, (trusting Philippine nuclear authorities, we're safe) we have to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary. This photo was one of our wedding invitations back then, I can’t believe we have invited 300 people during our wedding, some of those actually I don’t know, they were my in-laws friends and relatives.
Had I been wed today, I would certainly decide for a three-person wedding ceremony, that’s me, my husband and the officiating officer. But  I wonder why this marriage ceremony is one of the celebrated rituals of human society, sorry about my feminist thinking, but to me marriage is just a piece of paper, the very spirit of this union is actually how each party reciprocate respect and value each one’s opinion and in the cases where you have kids, mutual responsibility to raise these children and not a burden to keep a marriage in one piece even if it hurts the other.

74TH ARAW NG DABAW 2011

Yes, it’s yet again another year older for the durian city. On March 16, Davao City will celebrate its 74th founding anniversary. Should the gods be showering lotssa moolah on the streets on this day, ‘walang nakukuha yung natutulog sa pancitan’ .. I go out on Kadayawan Fiesta instead, love to see those flower floats than those ‘Mutya’ ek, ek!

MY CHOICE …

I’ve eaten quiet a lot of Sodium nitrite last night, I’ve devoured three sticks of these dogs. I think it won’t kill me right immediately. Wahh!

Doctor: Did you know that sodium nitrate used as preservative, coloring and flavoring in hot dogs (and other processed meats) is one of the causes of the formation of cancer-causing chemicals called nitrosamines?
Me: Who Cares, nobody get out of this planet alive anyway. But please, let me live longer…
Doctor: that’s not for me to decide …
Me: then who?
Doctor: it’s you, your choice of magnolia or purefoods..

Designer perfumes can be very expensive. If you go to malls, the least you can have is P500-600 for every 10 ml of original perfumes.

THE RIGHT LIGHTING FIXTURES

I was cleaning up my disk drive when I got across this photo. I remember I took this when I attended a wedding of one of my friends around here, this was just one of the vanity lighting Davao Convention and Trade Center had installed around the hall, their wedding event planner practically had turned the whole area into a lighted fantasy land, and it was real magical. Some of the table decorations weren’t expensive though but the lightings really had transformed the whole hall into a wonderland.

This event center is actually one of the havens of wedding receptions here, other than the superb food the whole area is adorned with contemporary lighting fixtures that tote up the mood of every event, even their bathroom have wall sconce lighting, awesome.

I've long been convinced that lighting can really make or break a particular space, and in this case it really made the whole place exquisite.

So, the next time you plan an event, plans of remodeling your homes, your bathrooms, your stores, and moreso when building up your dream homes, always consider the importance of integrating lighting fixtures into the building design, because even the dullest place when adorned with lights can turn into some place fantastic.

Tata, thanks for dropping by on this side of town.

WRITINGS ON THE CEREAL BOX

This is just one of those days when a blogger forgot to bring her notes to the grocery and what can be more fitting than writing your inspiration on a cereal box. Actually, I find it hard deciphering what I wrote when I got home because it’s too messy, now I’m calling the manufacturer of this cereal box, to please include a mom blogger’s space at the back of the cereal box next time. Lol.

I beg your indulgence but I own, really a terrible handwriting, hence, was very thankful when email was invented, much more the invention of computers, it saved my face.. wahhhh!

Anyway, nothing much on this side of town except that I’ll be on the park this afternoon for the Women’s International Day celeb. Tata, thanks for dropping by.

WHERE TO BUY MEDICAL SCRUBS ONLINE

If you’re keen about the clothing trends of our nursing practitioners these days you would probably notice that they’ve evolved from the classic Florence Nightingale gown style to the modern medical scrubs that we often see these days.

I love to see these nurses in their classic skirt and cap. I find them so dignified in their white uniform, although I seldom see nurses who are into these clothes right now, except for those who are still in school; maybe because wearing medical scrubs is more comfortable to move around than in those skirts.

But on the other hand, I find it so cute, especially those men nurses assigned in the hospital pedia department, where they wear this Winnie the Pooh printed mens scrubs. My kids love to point at their clothes. It’s so pleasing and so light to the eyes. Kids find it not as intimidating compared to wearing the classic white one.
Whoever have thought about this strategy of nurses clothing evolution, it truly have served its purpose right, not only to the kids who love this cartoon characters on the nurses scrubs but I think nurses find it also comfortable to wear.

And if you’re a medical pro or have nurse relatives who plan to score some of these, you can actually buy scrubs online,  guaranteed quality at a price you can afford. So what are you waiting for, fill-in those online carts now!

Tata, thanks everyone for dropping by on this side of town. See you again.

DAVAO'S UNIQUE LANGUAGE

Language is an integral part of culture, it enables people to transcend space and time. And in the language of Emy Pascasio, language is an excellent medium by which to study the value system of any people because it reveals choices, direction of interest ….

There are more or less a hundred and seventy languages in the Philippines, but during the Commonwealth period Pres.Quezon promoted a national language based on Tagalog, but this was opposed by many ethnic linguistic groups especially the Cebuanos which constitute the largest speaking group.

Davao City, aptly called the melting pot of cultures, but I call it the ‘salad bowl’ of cultures is home to many dialects. Davao City alone has 15 ethnic dialects - Manobo, Mansaka, Tiruray among others, add to that Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilonggo, Ilocano, Chavacano, Moslem, Bicolano, Boholano. Name it, we'll speak it.

Call it creolization, hybridization but taga-Davao has managed to construct a language of its own, in resolving the tension between Tagalog and Bisaya language, in which I call it ‘Tag-ya’, a construct of Tagalog and Bisaya. And this language made Davaoenos stand up if placed in a crowd of Filipinos.

It may sound like ‘bastardizing’ both dialects, but strangely though, this made Davaoenos unique and set us apart from others.

So here we go ….. some of these are adaptations from Sir Rey of Ateneo de Davao University.

Manilenos ask, 'Ano nga `yong pangalan mo?'.
In Davao we say, 'Ano gani `yong pangalan (or worse, "ngalan") mo?'.

To state a fact, Manilenos say, 'Talagang mabait si Janice.'
In Davao , we say. 'Mabait bitaw gyud si Janice'. Too assertive, right?

And when somebody commits a mistake or surprises someone, Davaoenos never fail to say, 'Halaka!', while shaking the point finger.

Davaoenos re-construct the Tagalog language by;

There's the GI+ verb, such as,'Gisabi kasi ni Edwin na mag-absent si Juan bukas', or 'Gi+nanon ni Lilai si Diel sa mukha'. I swear to all the gods!
You'll never find 'ginanon' in any Tagalog dictionary.

There's the KA+ adjective, as in, 'Ka+puti gyud ng mukha ni Alice uy’ or 'Ka+payat gyud ni Jason ngayon.'

Or the MAKA+ verb form, such as, 'Maka-inis talaga si Ryan, uy!' or 'Maka-uwi talaga ako ng matagal ngayon' kay nandito pa si sir.

The NAG+ verb, as in,'Nag+sabi kasi si Tita Jo na magpunta daw tayo ng airport' or 'Hindi pa man siya nag+dating, uy!'

Davaoenos add new words or new meanings to old words to the dictionary, like;

NAKIN: 'Alam man nakin `yan ba!', 'Saan nakin kita nakita gani?'.

KU-AN: 'Ku-an daw ang gawin mo', 'Si ku-an kasi ano masyado'. (No sense at all.)

To express disgust over someone, Davaoenos utter, 'Gago kaba diay para maniwala sa kanya', or 'Ano man yan siya uy!', or 'Maka-inis man yan siya, uy!', or when pestered when doing something, you'd quip,'Huwag lagi ba!'

On the other hand, when we praise somebody's extra special deed or talent, our Davaoeno tongue slips words like,'Kuyaw lagi `yan siya!', 'Galenga
niya uy!', 'Ayusa niya uy!', 'Kuyawa ni Orly uy!' or 'Hindi ako makatu-o sa ginawa niya!' .
Hay, maka+tawa talaga. (Ooops!)

No matter how long a true blooded Davaoeno stay in Manila or in the
States, the moment s/he’s back to Davao, their tongue feels as at home as they do.

Language is the very soul of every being. Be it hybridized or creolized, you just can't do anything about it. Or as how Davaoenos say it,'Anohin man natin yan?'

GALENGA TALAGA NG TAGA-DAVAO UY! ASTIGIDIG!!!! DAVAO ROCKS!!!!

NOSTALGIA

Photobucket
Admittedly, this blogging thing really has taken a toll on this mommy’s life, even while at the bathroom doing my number 2 I couldn’t resist thinking what will be great for today’s nostalgic episode.

Then, all of a sudden this not so old fella at the back of our house came singing in his wildest, awful voice this pinoy classic ‘Saan ka man naroroon’, geez ! So early in the morning why the song, maybe if not because of his voice, I mean his singing voice, I could have cried a river, since this is one of the national anthems of my father – which I haven’t seen him in months already.

But nonetheless, this might give justice to the song instead….

I don’t know this guy, but he's a Filipino talent, I swear it’s a very moving rendition, I hope this guy will be another YouTube sensation and will make it to somewhere else.

ALWAYS ASK YOU DOCTOR

According to the World Fact book, heart disease was the number cause of death in the Philippines in 2010. This trend is not only present in this country but it draws same pattern worldwide. And what is so alarming is that there is a rise in the number of young people contracting heart disease today.

Experts explained that this is brought about by our lifestyle of convenience. Number one factor is food - too salty, too sweet, too much preservative, and just plain much of everything, add there smoking, drinking and a lazy thought of exercising - to name a few.

At times we just take life for granted but for those moms like me who still have kids to take care unto, I really take extra effort to take care of my health for them. So far with my check-ups, there weren’t signs of looming heart disease yet, but just in case, it’s always good to know what medicines that are most potent to ward off chest pains.

I heard some doctors around prescribed – metoprolol (me TOE proe lole), this medicine is given to patients that shows symptoms of chest pains, this works to reduce the workload of the heart assisting a patient’s heart to beat regularly.

And if you are feeling uneasy and feeling something painful right on your bosom, do not hesitate to visit your doctor and ask for more details on metoprolol uses.

Always remember not to self-medicate, ask your doctor for help.
