GIANT TREE IN DAVAO CITY

We brought the children out tonight for another eternally requested dinner ‘chicken barbeque’, reckless thoughts keep rolling yeah, we will be winged humans soon.

After some unlimited rice and bottomless iced tea, we had a side trip on our way home and stopped-over at oldest mall in town, Victoria Plaza Mall in JP Laurel St. for giant Christmas tree watching. This thousand-bulb lit Christmas tree is a yearly attraction in this side of town, and that parents got a hard time convincing children to go home, with some strategy like … Oh! We have ten minutes before Bumble Bee will arrive to devour this tree, we better hurry up! The next thing you knew they’re all racing back to speed-up the car. I amaze myself there. Good strat mom!

Here’s some pictures of the tree, apologies for the blurry, shaky shot, my husband said it’s a depreciated tech, thought of might buy a new one if I have extras this Christmas.

Anyway, thanks for reading. See you again for another experience in this side of town.

‘THE MAYOR’ and ‘THE SPEAKER’

While my morning rituals are in progress I turned on the television hoping to get some pieces of information about the latest. Then on a bright sunny, Sunday morning the ever beloved-mayor of Davao City, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, in his red shirt layered with black vest in his eternally firing mouth made all my rituals came to pause. I wonder why this show GIKAN SA MASA, PARA SA MASA shown in ABS-CBN Davao was aired this early about 8:30 when normally it is shown at 9AM. They might have moved it earlier so I can write this entry, (hahaha!) most of the time I missed this ‘no commercial break’ show of him because of a mother’s Sunday grocery errands.

This is no making-up things or anything of this kind but I have voted for this man since the first time I had executed suffrage. I love this mayor of ours especially when he gives comment, pieces of advice to just anything related and not related to this city, he would always find a way to say it in an objective with lots of sacrilegious words, in humanely-coercive, humorous manner.

I caught the part where Mayor Duterte was comparing The Speaker of the House, yes! The Speaker of the House of Representative of the Republic of the Philippines, Boy Nograles (as he is fondly called here in the city), to Roderick Paulate. My god! My room reverberated with laughter when he said that, (with all due respect to this respected actor.)

‘The Speaker’ had signified his intention of running for mayor in this city opposing the ‘Inday ng buhay’ of the mayor, his daughter Sarah. I can see, this will be another thrilling episode of this city’s mayoral election.

Never in half of my life where this two prominent political figure in this city had became friends, ‘The Mayor’ had just proven it not when he recalled some of the unlikely incidents back in their younger days when ‘The Speaker’ will ran back home when wrestled by some of their friends.

‘The Mayor’ taunted on the ‘The Speaker’ to drop his men in wedding attire (bodyguards in Barong Tagalog) to face ‘The Mayor’ head-on and threatened more ‘The Speaker’ to hit him in front of the people of Davao, it was hilariously-alarming when ‘The Mayor’ said ‘tamparoson taka atubanga sa mga taga-Davao. It may sound like ‘The Mayor’ always provoke ‘The Speaker’ but it has always been this way ever since.

I just hope this rift between the two will not escalate to bringing backhoe in the mountains. They’re not that barbaric to sink that low. Asked when ‘The Mayor’ is running again? He is … as a Barangay Captain in the next barangay election (bet ya! He sounds real serious.)

There were a lot more hilarious comments ‘The Mayor’ had said to ‘The Speaker’, we’ll wait and see what will be the next move of the ‘The Speaker’. I’m positive this will be headlined in tomorrow’s local paper.

See you again for another happening in this side of town.

MODERN DAY CAMPING

Passing by the school’s covered court the other day, I saw these girls setting up their tents. I ask around what these girls are into and somebody said, ‘they’re sleeping here tonight, they’re camping.’

Having my curiosity satisfied, I started to wonder, is this really how camping are being done now? Is this really how dangerous the outside world that these children are setting-up their tents under the comfort of another roof? Or parents now are just so protective of their children (well, I would do the same.) What is more interesting it’s an ‘all-girl’camping.

Truly meanings have changed even the idea of camping. No wonder why today’s children lack defenses to battle simple and practical everyday problems. Why would they anyway? Practically everything’s provided for.

See you for another experience in this side of town.

Think Mindanao, Feel Mindanao, Bring Peace to Mindanao

This is the theme of the culmination of the Mindanao Week of Peace in Assumption College of Davao. Ironic as it may seem that while we celebrate the Mindanao Week of Peace, brutal killings happened in Maguindanao province.

It is just so poignantly depressing that at the thoroughgoing effort of people like myself who wholeheartedly support and inculcating the culture-of-peace in the young minds of my students, a barbaric Maguindanao massacre happened that made me believe all my efforts had gone with the wind.

With this event it made me travel down memory lane that for quite a while I had been a resident of this area. I worked for a local paper ‘The Mindanao Cross’ right after graduation in college back in the early 90s. As always this place never passed an election time without bloody encounters, ambush, burning the whole village making it no-human’s-land, bombing, etc. name the kind of violence I had witnessed accounts of these during the heyday of my newspaper career.

But no matter how many times one hears about meaningless killings, it is still horrifying to hear each time it happens.

The massacre yesterday of the members of Mangudadatu family and journalists in Ampatuan, Maguindanao was, without a doubt, a deliberate move to sow fear among voters of the area. It was entirely designed to jolt away anyone who dares rock the political boat in the province of Maguindanao. It was undoubtedly carried out by those in power to maintain the status quo.

How could these people descend so low?

My sympathies to the family of those who innocently been murdered by these mad evil-minded people.

To the people of Mindanao, let us all be vigilant. While at some point I dwell on hopelessness and lose heart with my advocacy, I go back to the thought that there can be more good people who desire peace than these dim-witted people who spread terror.

And to the Bloggers of Mindanao, let us not permit cowardice to blight the magnificence that is inherent of Mindanao. We should not permit the deaths of the blameless to be worthless.

And to all my friends in the blogosphere, let it be known that Maguindanao is just a province in Mindanao. I insist not to label the whole of Mindanao or Southern Philippines as lawless.

And if you support our initiative to promote and nurture a Culture Of Peace in this part of Mindanao, please display a black ribbon on your blogs to signify awareness, vigilance, compassion for the family of the victims, and above all JUSTICE.

Lastly, it should be noted that our common goal is lasting peace, meaningful, sustainable development in the whole of Mindanao. (You can copy the black ribbon and post it in your blog, Thank You!)

ASK THE BLOGSTER

These past few days I’ve been under mild anxiety attack over worrying sick that this blog of mine will expire in 8 months as every time I have blog check for traffic rank the result would always tell me that it’s already 9 years old and it will expire in a few months, when in reality I have been blogging for just barely 3 months. So anxious about the status of this little virtual world of mine I ask people around who knew best than I do.

I was hesitating at first as they might ask for consultation fees. But not this fellow, He gave his words free. I’m talking about John Lottery of ASK THE BLOGSTER, I consulted him about these worries of mine and this is what he has to say;

John Lottery said …

Vernz,

Stop Worrying!!!

Your blog (and the 3 of mine) are all created on the free service blogger, and have a main url domain name of blogspot.com which is owned by Google.

If you use whois.com and enter blogspot.com, you'll see that this URL was:

Created on............: 2000-07-31.
Expires on............: 2010-07-31.
Record last updated on: 2009-06-07.

Since today is 2009-11-23, you can see that blogspot.com will expire in 8 months - 23 days and is now 9 years 3 months and we days old.

I put in your blog name and mine into website grader, and both return the same Off-Page SEO Domain Info.

Since our blogs are sub-domains of blogspot, we don't have a url listed nor do we have to pay for it.

Since Google owns blogspot, rest assured that they will renew their URL registration when the time comes.

So, stop worrying and start writing!

It won't expire!

That's the beauty of using blogger. We don't have to do anything except create our blog, write new posts, and publish them.

If you have any other questions, let me know!

John, Thank you for erasing all my worries away … All the best ... More Power!

ART EXHIBIT FOR PEACE IN MINDANAO

I’m preempting my Color of the Day post as I visited an art exhibit today at G-Mall here in Davao City. This exhibit is sponsored by the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and runs November 20-22, 2009. It’s called Nawan: Kalinaw-Mindanao, Advancing Co-initiatives For Strengthening a Culture-of-Peace in Mindanao. This is just one of the worthwhile events made along with the celebration of the Mindanao Week of Peace.

I was just so sad people just don’t care enough to drop by and look around. I don’t know personally some of the artists though and I’m sharing photos of the works of those that I know.

English Translation – PICTURES OF PEACE

”Hung-Hong sa Kinaiyahan” – Artist Noy Narciso (this is somewhat like shells of fruits woven together)

”Shade the World” – Artist, Jeff Bangot. I love this piece, he used coco shell as media, 24x22 inches

”One Blood” – Artist, Eugene Canadilla, a piece that truly depict peace, acrylic in canvas, 110x80cm

COLOR OF THE DAY – My Go-Green Friday

It is wrong to say that we have no choice because the ‘no choice’ in itself is a choice we opt to choose. But for whatever it is that we wanted with [y]our life one thing is sure it has to go on.

Just like this plant where it holds the powerful energies of nature, growth, and desire to expand so do I.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do. -Eleanor Roosevelt

Change and transformation is necessary for growth and freedom to pursue new ideas is what green color represents.

Moreso, Green has an immense healing power. It is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green implies strength and fortitude. Above all, it represents a go signal to go on with what we have hoped to live.

Thank you for reading, see you again for tomorrow’s color. (Photo taken at a Retreat House in Tacunan, Tugbok District here in Davao City)

COLOR OF THE DAY – My Silent Mellow-Yellow Thursday

This is quite a lengthy post but I dare you to just read on.

After the hues that pervaded my being these past few days, finally I am seeing a yellow light at the end of the tunnel. It might just be a ‘band-aid’ answer but at least I’m beginning to glimpse a promise of positive tomorrow.

In this world where everybody wants to be heard, chances are nobody cares to listen and for a weary and struggling soul you just opt to settle in silence. Society tells us to be assertive, but sometimes the body is willing but the spirit is weak.

And to learn to get in touch with the silence within ourselves and know that everything in this life has a purpose is I think the best piece of work humans can do.

And from that silence draw optimism, enlightenment, spark creative thoughts, draw in positive mind-set that generates energy which is also the significance of yellow color.

SILENCE IS NOT MERELY AN ABSENCE OF NOISE, REAL SILENCE BEGINS WHEN A REASONABLE BEING WITHDRAWS FROM THE NOISE IN ORDER TO FIND PEACE AND ORDER IN THEIR INNER SANCTUARY. - Peter Minard

Yellow shines with optimism, enlightenment, and happiness. It is also mentally stimulating, it activates our memory, quicken our nervous system and it encourages communication.

Like the energy of a bright sunny day, yellow brings clearness and awareness. Put some yellow in your life when you want clarity for decision-making, relief from 'burnout', panic, nervousness, exhaustion, put on something yellow for sharper memory and concentration skills and this color can also be an effective protection from lethargy and depression during dull weather and gray moods.

According to research Yellow color creates a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Pure bright yellow is an attention getter, which is why taxicabs are painted in yellow.

Men usually perceive yellow as a jokey, childish color, so it is not recommended to use yellow when selling expensive and posh products to men – no men will buy a yellow business suit or a yellow car or anything (This is according to my reads, some men can contest). Yellow is an unstable and spontaneous color, so avoid using yellow if you want to suggest stability and safety.

When overused, yellow also may have a disturbing effect; it is known that babies cry more in yellow rooms so it is not recommended to paint nursery rooms with yellow.

To sum it all this color is what represent my day today! See you again for tomorrow’s color.

COLOR OF THE DAY – My Gray-Mood Wednesday

So early in the morning I got pestered by somebody who whether I like it not has to live with, has to co-exist with. Being part of a cultural system that pays back debts of gratitude (utang na loob) until the day you die, it just gives me this grayish mood, a limbo whether to get positive of negative social sanction.

Browsing over my stock photos I stumble on this feline that I think best represent my mood that color my day today. Indeed, my day is a wretched gray Wednesday, but it has to be lived through.
“WE GROW GRAY IN OUR SPIRIT LONG BEFORE WE GROW GRAY IN OUR HAIR.” Charles Lamb

On the other hand, it is said that gray is the color of knowledge, wisdom and intellect. It is perceived as long-lasting, timeless, and often as sleek or cultured. It is a color that is dignified, conservative, and carries authority. Gray is controlled and inconspicuous and is considered a color of conciliation, perhaps because it sits between the extremes of black and white. Gray is a precise neutral, which is why designers prefer to use it as a background color.

Indeed a color of compromise.

COLOR OF THE DAY - My Blue Monday

I will be very busy in the next few weeks, and updating this blog will I think take the back seat, but I always want something new everyday, so I am thinking of an idea to come up with new updates that will not require much of my time. Color of the Day Photo Post will be I think a perfect key.

I’m starting off with MY BLUE MONDAY.

THE 'SWAK' CULTURE

Queuing to pay my groceries yesterday I spotted this consumer box piled at the conspicuous place at the grocery store, it caught up my attention and took a picture of it;

Who knows this emerging culture will save the planet Earth!

My reckless thoughts fired-up again, thinking that least Filipinos realized it we already have been answering the call of many environmentalists to help save this prettiest of planets – the EARTH.

In fact, Filipinos have at a snail's pace been embedding a folkway into its cultural system to address this concern. How? The SWAK folkway.

I have seen the TV ad of Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera aired on RPN-9 on saving the planet Earth with a clear message to have only what we need.

Simply translated to live simply, do away with so many ‘butingtings’, resist buying decorations from China, na wala namang kwenta ang ending basura, clutters we actually do not need, and encourage a lifestyle that buys only what is needed.

SWAK, other than the photo’s definition, can also be translated as ‘no more no less’ or in Tagalog ‘walang labis, walang kulang’ or ‘eksakto lang’, this lead me to mull over this…. That if everybody in our society join in to integrate this folkway into our cultural system, then our own little way will really go a long way. Who knows SWAK culture might save the planet.

PEOPLE’S PARK in DAVAO CITY

Whenever we plan to take the kids to Davao City’s People’s Park something always pop-out that would spoil our plan. But tonight without planning at all, finally we were able to take them there.

Since this park opened last year, it maybe a shame to admit but this is my first time to visit. Thank God it’s Friday no class the following day! So after my 7:00pm class we have grilled chicken (again) for dinner and headed to the park.

In honor of the people of Davao City who paid their taxes from their hard earn money to come up with this park thus the name ‘People’s Park’.

If you plan to visit Davao City, include in your itinerary People’s Park, it is not just a park, but it showcased, through the life-size sculptures of Kublai Milan prominently displayed inside the park, the rich, diverse culture of Davao City.

MY PART-TIME WORKPLACE

For some years now I have been negotiating between my reproductive and my productive job, a full-time mom being my reproductive job and a part-time college instructor as my productive job. This is what I get being a gendered organism in this world. Anyway, our second semester classes start tomorrow and I am sharing to you some pictures of the place I hover at least three hours a day of my life.

This is where I exhaust my calories everyday, I prefer taking the stairs when going to my classes.

TAPESTRY OF DIVERSITY in DAVAO CITY

The art piece at Davao Museum (Picture taken so early in the morning, Museum is still closed)

Let me show you an interesting piece of art in this side of town. I’ve long wanted to post this but it was only the other morning that I have a chance to visit Davao Museum.

This artwork is mounted at the entrance of the Davao Museum. This is sculpted by Ann Pamintuan and she called this TAPESTRY OF DIVERSITY, as the plate indicated she had this made on 10-10-2007.

This piece is made up of small strands of wrought iron, welded together to form a tapestry. I think this piece achieved its balance, how the artist organized the elements in putting up this piece. Looking at this piece from a distance, it truly depicts a pliant tapestry.

I love elaborate pieces and I was captivated by the shape, the texture, the form, the iron lines, the pattern, the space it occupies and moreso the value of this artwork in terms of its veiled meaning to the place where it represent.

I love this piece the first time I saw it. While it is also important what the artist means about the piece, to me what is more of significance is what the art piece influenced me.

This piece truly represented the socio-cultural set-up of Davao City, a diverse community, home to a number of ethnic groups, varied individualities, strong personal views, beliefs and customs, which I think each strand of iron represent, that were woven together like a tapestry that together we are one, we can achieve a beautiful drapery that pictures who we are. I’m just proudest I’m one those strands of iron (and just hope not the rusty one.).

I have taken some early morning shots of the piece and if you have a chance to visit Davao City, you can see this piece at Davao Museum. Enjoy!
The piece is about 15 feet high, mounted on a cemented platform

DAVAO'S UNIQUE LANGUAGE

Language is an integral part of culture and human culture I think cannot exist without it. Language enables people to transcend space and time. And in the language of Emy Pascasio, language is an excellent medium by which to study the value system of any people because it reveals choices, direction of interest …. There are more or less eighty languages and dialects in the Philippines, but during the Commonwealth period Pres.Quezon promoted a national language based on Tagalog, but this was opposed by many ethnic linguistic groups especially the Cebuanos which constitute the largest speaking group.

Davao City, aptly called the melting pot of cultures, but I call it the ‘salad bowl’ of cultures is home to many dialects. Davao City alone has 15 ethnic dialects add to that Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilonggo, Ilocano, Chavacano, Moslem, Bicolano, Boholano. Name it, we'll speak it.

Call it creolization, hybridization but taga-Davao has managed to construct a language of its own, in resolving the tension between Tagalog and Bisaya language, in which I call it ‘Tag-ya’, a construct of Tagalog and Bisaya. And this language made Davaoenos stand up if placed in a crowd of Filipinos.

It may sound like ‘bastardizing’ both dialects, but strangely though, this made Davaoenos unique and set us apart from others.

So here we go ….. some of these are adaptations from Sir Rey of Ateneo de Davao University.

Manilenos ask, 'Ano nga `yong pangalan mo?'.
In Davao we say, 'Ano gani `yong pangalan (or worse, "ngalan") mo?'.

To state a fact, Manilenos say, 'Talagang mabait si Janice.'
In Davao , we say. 'Mabait bitaw gyud si Janice'. Too assertive, right?

And when somebody commits a mistake or surprises someone, Davaoenos never fail to say, 'Halaka!', while shaking the point finger.

Davaoenos re-construct the Tagalog language by;

There's the GI+ verb, such as,'Gisabi kasi ni Edwin na mag-absent si Juan bukas', or 'Gi+nanon ni Lilai si Diel sa mukha'. I swear to all the gods!
You'll never find 'ginanon' in any Tagalog dictionary.

There's the KA+ adjective, as in, 'Ka+puti gyud ng mukha ni Alice uy’ or 'Ka+payat gyud ni Jason ngayon.'

Or the MAKA+ verb form, such as, 'Maka-inis talaga si Ryan, uy!' or 'Maka-uwi talaga ako ng matagal ngayon' kay nandito pa si sir.

The NAG+ verb, as in,'Nag+sabi kasi si Tita Jo na magpunta daw tayo ng airport' or 'Hindi pa man siya nag+dating, uy!'

Davaoenos add new words or new meanings to old words to the dictionary, like;

NAKIN: 'Alam man nakin `yan ba!', 'Saan nakin kita nakita gani?'.

KU-AN: 'Ku-an daw ang gawin mo', 'Si ku-an kasi ano masyado'. (No sense at all.)

To express disgust over someone, Davaoenos utter, 'Gago kaba diay para maniwala sa kanya', or 'Ano man yan siya uy!', or 'Maka-inis man yan siya, uy!', or when pestered when doing something, you'd quip,'Huwag lagi ba!'

On the other hand, when we praise somebody's extra special deed or talent, our Davaoeno tongue slips words like,'Kuyaw lagi `yan siya!', 'Galenga
niya uy!', 'Ayusa niya uy!', 'Kuyawa ni Orly uy!' or 'Hindi ako makatu-o sa ginawa niya!' .

Hay, maka+tawa talaga. (Ooops!)

No matter how long a true blooded Davaoeno stay in Manila or in the
States, the moment s/he’s back to Davao, their tongue feels as at home as they do.

Language is the very soul of every being. Be it hybridized or creolized, you just can't do anything about it. Or as how Davaoenos say it,'Anohin man natin yan?'

GALENGA TALAGA NG TAGA-DAVAO UY! ASTIGIDIG!!!! DAVAO ROCKS!!!!

Act of Random Kindness

I was on my way home yesterday when I spotted this man along Lapu-Lapu St., in Agdao Public Market here in Davao City. He was struggling so hard to self-push his wheelchair. It makes it even harder for him as side roads are very dangerous and concretes are not evenly flattened, which made his wheelchair stuck in the utility hole.

Still some acts of random kindness exist in this engaging time, a tricycle driver got out of his driving seat and helped this man moved his chair again.

It leads me to realize that this differently-abled person has struggled much to survive what reason I have to retreat from life? Really! A sight worth reflecting.

While Davao City has been recognized as a Child-friendly city in the Philippines, seeing this scene of my everydayness made my heart yearn that one of these days Davao City will also be a differently-abled friendly city. PAANO?

ALL SOUL’S DAY: THE FILIPINO WAY

Part of the rich Filipino culture is the observance of the All Soul’s Day, in Tagalog ‘Araw ng mga Patay/Undas’ in Cebuano we call it ‘Kalag-Kalag’. Not just a simple observance but generally it is observed in an elaborate way.

This occasion of the year is observed at least three or two weeks before this date. This is evident by commercial establishment’s prominent displays of candles of all sizes and shapes, pre-arranged synthetic flowers line the exits of the department stores. Black and orange colors rule the conspicuous areas of virtually anywhere in the malls and restos. Skeletons, skulls, scary figures of all sorts lined the entrances and exits of the malls.

For some years now, it has become a practice in Davao City that practically all malls hold ‘till midnight madness sale. During the heyday of the ‘Halloween Midnight Madness Sale’ traffic is crazy.

Public markets are also not exempted, flower stalls increase their prices, coconut graters lined the side roads, and famous ‘binignit’ ingredients are notably displayed.

This occasion also is a time for family reunions, relatives, siblings gather to pray for the soul of the dead. Being part of this Filipino equation, I too have some stories to tell. I went to Davao Memorial Park this morning to pay also respect to our dearly departed. I took some pictures and sharing to you the essence of ornate celebration of All Soul’s Day in this side of town.
